چکیده

Our scientific culture is such that new ideas and new technologies may be introduced into practice but usually meet resistance. Surgery is one such area. There is a good mix of manual dexterity and decision making that make surgery a good area for simulation assisted training; not to mention the serious consequences of training mistakes for the live patient. In any skill there exists the popular wisdom that one can only go so far by oneself after that one needs a trainer from which to learn; why can’t that trainer be assisted by an expert simulator?

Integrated arm and hand training using adaptive robotics and virtual reality simulations

Virtual Reality simulations interfaced with robotic arm devices are being used for training the upper extremity of people post-stroke. The benefit has been hypothesized to be the ability to provide repetitive task practice, directed visual and auditory feedback, learning algorithms and graded resistive and assistive forces. All of these elements can be manipulated to provide individualized moto...

Kinematic and Neurophysiological Consequences of an Assisted-Force-Feedback Brain-Machine Interface Training: A Case Study

In a proof-of-principle prototypical demonstration we describe a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI) paradigm for upper limb motor-training. The proposed technique allows a fast contingent and proportionally modulated stimulation of afferent proprioceptive and motor output neural pathways using operant learning. Continuous and immediate assisted-feedback of force proportional to rolandic ...

Investigation of methods for constructing gloves with tactile and force feedback for virtual reality and telecontrol of anthropomorphic manipulators

Aims. Devices that allow using the functionality of natural hand movements are of the greatest interest. The purpose of this study is to select areas of research at the intersection of several fields of science – biomechanics and cybernetics to develop scientific and technical approaches to track the movements of the operator's fingers and form feedback tactile and force communication received ...

Motor learning without doing: trial-by-trial improvement in motor performance during mental training.

Although there is converging experimental and clinical evidences suggesting that mental training with motor imagery can improve motor performance, it is unclear how humans can learn movements through mental training despite the lack of sensory feedback from the body and the environment. In a first experiment, we measured the trial-by-trial decrease in durations of executed movements (physical t...

Retraining of interjoint arm coordination after stroke using robot-assisted time-independent functional training.

We have developed a haptic-based approach for retraining of interjoint coordination following stroke called time-independent functional training (TIFT) and implemented this mode in the ARMin III robotic exoskeleton. The ARMin III robot was developed by Drs. Robert Riener and Tobias Nef at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule Zurich, or ETH Zuric...
